Traditional tethered systems limit the recording environment when monitoring physiological signals such as ECG, EMG, EEG, EOG and nerve activity in conscious animals. Telemetry is a wireless technology that allows recording and transfer of information of interest from a remote system, and therefore expands the range of monitoring capabilities. The word is derived from Greek, which “tele” means remote, and “metron” means measure.
ADInstruments offer a range Telemetry Research systems for measuring biopotentials such as ECG and sympathetic nerve activity in small and large animals. These systems incorporate the following components:
- Transmitter – (fully implantable) detects, amplifies and transmits (transmission range up to 5 m depending on laboratory conditions) data to the remote receiver.
- Receiver - receives digital data from the transmitter and reconstructs an analog output which is compatible with PowerLab data acquisition systems.
- Wireless Power Charger – recharges the transmitter without wires while the transmitter is still within the animal using inductive power transfer (IPT)
- Data Acquisition Hardware and Software - Powerlab with LabChart software provides fast and easy monitoring, recording and analysis.
The features and benefits of these systems include:
- High sampling rates for accurate signal recording
- Transmitters with a controlled power-down function to extend the life of the battery
- Transmitter batteries which are recharged wirelessly
- 12 independent transmission frequencies: Eliminates the need for special housing or animal isolation (ie. animals with different transmitters can be housed in the same cage)
- Digital transmission up to 5 meters
SchedulingThese systems include the ML319 TR Scheduler Pod and LabChart Scheduler Extension, allowing the user to program recording periods. The scheduler allows the user to:
- automate data collection from up to 12 wireless transmitters with a single receiver
- allows data recording durations of seconds, minutes or hours of data for periods over days to weeks
- extend the life of the transmitter battery by powering-down the transmitter when not recording data
LabChartLabChart software (for Windows and Macintosh) combines the familiar simplicity of a traditional strip chart recorder with the powerful analysis features of a digital acquisition system. LabChart software and a PowerLab data acquisition unit provide data integrity, easy selection of hardware settings, powerful online and offline analysis, procedure automation, seamless extraction of experimental data and flexible display options. Acquisition and analysis capabilities can be further increased with
LabChart Extensions and
LabChart Modules. LabChart Modules are available as part of
LabChart Pro and LabChart Extensions are free for download from the website for existing LabChart users.
LabChart users can calculate and display online or offline heart rate using features such as Cyclic Measurements (Cycle variables, Mac) in LabChart. The mean and standard deviation of the heart rate can also be calculated (over any time interval) using the Data Pad feature in LabChart.
SNA AnalysisThe Shift Extension (Mac) in LabChart allows the sympathetic nerve recording to be shifted back in time so that the peak of each sympathetic burst is aligned to the R-wave of the ECG. Amplitude, area, slope, duration and other features of the RMS-processed/integrated nerve signal can be readily measured using the Peak Parameters extension (Win or Mac) and added to the Data Pad for export to statistics programs.
ECG Analysis Module (Windows)The
MLS360/6 ECG Analysis Module provides a comprehens
ive set of tools that automatically detects and reports values of ECG recordings. The software can be used with ECG recordings taken from humans and many species of animals from pigs through to mice.
It provides
- Real-time analysis and data extraction of ECG parameters
- PQRST amplitudes
- Time intervals such as RR, PR, JT, QT and QTc
- Analysis of ECG parameters in real-time or offline
- Automated detection and averaging of ECG cycles
- Automated tabulation and data extraction of ECG parameters
- Automated real-time or offline ECG Plots
- Graphical QT vs RR, QT vs Time & RR vs Time plots
- Waterfall plot
Heart Rate Variability (HRV) Module (Windows or Macintosh)
The MLS310 HRV Module provides a comprehensive set of tools for the analysis and display of variation in the interval between heartbeats in human and animal electrocardiogram recordings.
The HRV Module:
- Detects and analyzes R waves & RR interval variation in ECG real-time or offline recordings
- Includes or excludes ectopic beats from analysis
- Adds R waves or remove short artifacts from analysis
- Provides data export options
- Provides automated HRV Analysis Windows
GLP and 21 CFR Part 11
For those researchers working within a laboratory requiring GLP and 21 CFR Part 11 compliance the GLP Client and GLP Server are available for use with LabChart (Windows only) and PowerLab data acquisition systems.
