World leading solution to patient absence in undergraduate health sciences education

BELLA VISTA, NSW, Australia, February 2011 ADInstruments is proud to announce the release of Medical Laboratories, a new component of LabTutor 4 Suite that allows educators to teach physiology in the context of its future use.  LabTutor Medical Laboratories are perfect for undergraduate students studying physiology for medical, nursing or health science courses, as they make the connection between student laboratory work and real patients with common clinical problems.

Coinciding with the release of the LabTutor 4.1 update, Medical Laboratories integrate physiological data acquisition with real patient case studies that feature high quality video interviews, as well as routine and specialist test results.
The Medical Laboratories consist of two parts.  The first part allows students to investigate their own physiology using LabTutor and ADInstruments transducers to measure parameters such as EEG, ECG, heart rate, blood pressure and more.

The second part of the Medical Laboratory enables students to ‘meet’ real patients (and sometimes their families) through a series of short video interviews.  Students then view the patient’s test results, and compare and contrast their own physiology to that of the patient.  After answering relevant questions and submitting a report, students are able to view a video of the consulting physician explaining the patient’s condition and treatments.

Medical Laboratories are entirely contained within the LabTutor platform, so there is no need for instructions, handouts or paper reports.  The first part of the Medical Laboratory must be completed in the lab, however the new LabTutor Online (an optional component of the LabTutor 4 Teaching Suite Package) allows educators to set the second part of the Medical Laboratory as homework that can be completed outside the classroom.

A variety of Medical Laboratories are available which address the physiology, pathology and treatment of frequently encountered clinical conditions, such as stroke, diabetes, renal failure and neuropathy.  Medical Laboratories are provided as a part of the LabTutor 4.1 Teaching Suite Package and ships with all new orders of ADInstruments Teaching Systems.
