Blood Pressure in Humans
Students may use PowerLab systems to make non-invasive
blood pressure measurements in human subjects.
The
PowerLab
data acquisition system may be used to introduce students to several non-invasive methods for determining blood pressure. A complete experiment (where blood pressure is estimated with a cuff, sphygmomanometer, stethoscope for auscultation, and finger pulse transducer) is available from the
Experiments section
.
ADInstruments provide a
Sphygmomanometer
for recording systolic blood pressure in human subjects that is ideal for demonstrations. The unit is coupled to a BP transducer that converts the applied pressure to an electronic signal. The transducer is suitable for connection to a PowerLab using direct Pod Ports, the
Bridge Pod
or
Bridge Amps
.
Simple experiments involve observing peripheral pulse changes at different cuff pressures using the
Piezo Electric Pulse Transducer
(or
IR Plethysmograph Finger Clip
). Further experiments can compare the results of auscultated pressures with Korotkoff sounds recorded using an
Electronic Stethoscope
or
Cardio Microphone
. The stethoscope and microphone connect directly to the
PowerLab
via its Pod Ports.
