Electrooculogram (EOG) Recordings

Using electrodes placed around the eyes, students can easily detect electrical activity associated with movements of the eye.

Students may use PowerLab data acquisition systems in undergraduate and advanced teaching laboratories to record a variety of eye movements. Application Notes that outline simple experiments on sensory physiology, human reflexes and human electrooculography are available from the Experiments section.

Non-invasive recordings of eye movements are measured using disposable or flat surface electrodes that are placed around the orbit (outer canthus) of the eye. These are connected to PowerLab via the Bio Amp or EOG Pod.

It is possible to record:
  • saccadic movements
  • smooth pursuit movements
  • optokinetic nystagmus
  • convergence and divergence
  • rapid eye movements during sleep
