Extracellular Recordings
Students are able to record extracellular potentials in vivo or in vitro
using the PowerLab data acquisition system and LabChart software.
Students may obtain extracellular recordings either in vivo in anaesthetized animals or in vitro using isolated tissue. Detailed information on specific teaching experiments is available from the Experiments section for extracellular recordings in the
Giant Earth Worm
and
Amphibian Sciatic Nerve
. The
Animal Physiology Teaching System
is an ideal system for laboratories investigating animal physiology. It incorporates nerve baths and other transducers that are suitable for extracellular recordings and investigations of cardiovascular and respiratory physiology.
The analog output of the
PowerLab
provides a suitable voltage stimulus for evoking impulses from the isolated sciatic nerve and earthworm giant fibers. The evoked extracellular action potential is then recorded with the built-in Bio Amplifier or separately using a
Bio Amp
.
The
Neurobiology Teaching System
also provides a range of equipment suitable for extracellular and intracellular recordings in neurobiology courses/cirriculums. An
Audio Monitor
is also available to convert neurophysiological signals into sound for easy monitoring.
