Use your iPod® as a data source.
Digital players can be more than just entertainment. Data files can be easily stored on an iPod hard drive and with just a few steps and the appropriate cable, data files may be played back through the PowerLab and into LabChart so students actually use the iPod as a data source. Data files can easily be saved in a .wav format using LabChart for Windows however playback from the iPod and subsequent recording can be done using LabChart for Windows or LabChart for Macintosh. Virtually any type of data that can be recorded with a PowerLab and LabChart and played back using a digital music recorder such as an iPod. Complex or time consuming experiments for a particular laboratory class can be saved to an iPod and used as the data source. This provides students the ability to record and analyze data that would otherwise be unavailable. Many features of acquisition and analysis can be explored using this technique including sampling rate, aliasing, range, filtering, etc in real time. In the following folders we have provided instructions on how to save data files in a .wav format using LabChart for windows, accessories (cables) required in connecting the iPod to PowerLab as well as information on transferring and playing files on the iPod. LabChart for windows uses a freely downloadable extension Export WAV, which will allow a LabChart data file to be saved in a .wav format.
