Understand the physiology around blood pressure and how to measure it. Use your knowledge to explore how essential hypertension affects individuals such as Mr L.

Body Temperature

Explore the elegant physiological connections between temperature, heat regulation and heat dysfunction such as hyperthermia and hypothermia. Learn five body temperature assessment procedures, then combine theory and practice to better understand 3 year old Liam M, who has fevers and febrile seizures.

Brain Structure & Reflexes

Become acquainted with basic neuroanatomy, cerebral circulation and reflexes, then learn how to assess reflexes and brain function. Use your knowledge to better understand Meet Mr W and his experience with stroke.

Childbirth

Familiarize yourself with aspects of childbirth such as pain relief, fetal presentation and postnatal care. Practice interpreting cardiotocography (CTG) recordings and understand the effects of synthetic oxytocin administration. In this module 'Jenny' will experience labor, resulting in the vaginal delivery of her first child.

Glucose Metabolism

Investigate the metabolic handling of glucose. Study normal and dysfunctional absorption and digestion while learning to assess blood glucose samples. Mrs C and Mr R, two patients with type 1 diabetes, help illustrate glucose metabolism.

Heart and Circulation

Learn about affairs of the heart. Study cardiac vessels, the cardiac cycle, the physiology of blood pressure and the assessment of cardiac diseases. Practice six exercises for assessing patient pulse including palpation and identifying arterial anastomes, then meet Mr D and hear about his peripheral vascular disease.

Heart and Electrocardiography

Explore patterns within cardiac electrical activity, ECG, cardiac axis and conduction and cardiac dysfunction. Practice the correct procedure for assessing ECG and pulse and observe the effects of exercise. Apply your knowledge to Mr M and hear about his experience with, and rehabilitation from, a myocardial infarction at age 39.

Heart Sounds

Listen to your heart, but learn its language first. Explore the meaning of heart sounds, cardiac valve function and disease and the cardiac cycle. Record ECGs and phonocardiograms in order to assess heart function. Listen to Mr H, a patient who has a heart murmur with chest pain and breathlessness.

Get to know PowerLab hardware and LabTutor software. Discover the basic features of acquisition, analysis and reporting using LabTutor.

Kidney and Urine

Study the gross anatomy and histology of the kidney and learn different aspects of renal function such as urine production and micturition. Learn techniques to determine the capacity of the human bladder and learn how to use urine test strips, then examine a patient with high blood pressure, Mr A.

Lung Function

Breathe easier after learning about the respiratory system and the respiratory parameters used to assess lung function. Perform spirometry and peak flow techniques that are used to calculate various lung parameters. Get to know Mrs M, who has a chronic and deteriorating lung condition.

Muscle and Fatigue

Stretch your knowledge of muscle and the neuromuscular junction a little further. Experiment with recording electrical activity from contracted muscles and investigate applications of electromyography (EMG) in assessing muscle fatigue. Ms P, a patient with facial weakness and diplopia, provides a case study of these applications.

Muscle Function

Learn about skeletal muscle anatomy and diseases that can affect skeletal muscle function. Discover procedures for electrically stimulating nerves and measuring twitch response and consider how the use of these procedures could help Mr F, a patient with deteriorating muscle function.

Peripheral Nerve Function

Realise the potential of the nervous system by learning how action potentials are triggered and propagated. Stimulate nerves and measure conduction velocities to help understand Mr B and his progressive paralysis.

Pregnancy

Grow your understanding of ovulation, fertilization and endocrine changes in both the fetus and the mother. Examine the hormonal and pharmacological control of smooth muscle in an isolated mammalian uterus preparation before experiencing the realities of pregnancy with four women: Jenny, Mrs C, Mrs J and Mrs S. Through these women, gain an understanding of the potential complications associated with diabetes and preterm labor.
