The Department of Neurobiology and Behavior at Cornell University will host a hands-on summer workshop for life science instructors seeking to expand their curriculum reach in the neurosciences. There will be two back- to-back training events: One (2.5 days) will be based on topics explored in the “Crawdad Project,” a three-year (1996-8) program funded by the National Science Foundation to promote the use of invertebrates in undergraduate physiology and neuroscience lab courses. The second (2.5 days) will focus on using modern neurogenetic tools in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. The two sections are designed to provide different, but complementary approaches to teaching integrative neuroscience. The overall goals of these workshops are to give teachers hands-on experience with invertebrate-based teaching modules that demonstrate basic principles of genetics, nervous system physiology, and animal behavior.
