ADInstruments' acclaimed software for life science laboratory teaching, LabTutor, has been enhanced by the release of LabAuthor. LabAuthor software gives educators easy-to-use tools for editing LabTutor physiology, pharmacology and biology experiments for PowerLab data acquisition systems. It also allows educators to create new LabTutor experiments to suit their classroom.
LabTutor software uses a web browser interface to guide students through each step of experiments including the underlying theory, acquiring real-time data and submitting reports. To date, ADInstruments has written and released over 40 physiology, pharmacology and biology LabTutor experiments.
LabTutor has been warmly received by the life science community. In the March 2008 edition of The American Biology Teacher, editor José Vázquez reviewed LabTutor as, "superior software that gives a new range of possibilities to laboratory activities". Similarly, recently published case studies from leading universities recount how LabTutor is enhancing first year physiology courses.
LabAuthor enables institutions to tailor LabTutor experiments to suit specific learning objectives, class sizes and equipment. Educators use a graphical interface to edit the text, images and page order of any LabTutor experiment, and add new data acquisition exercises, analysis activities and theoretical information. Educators can even create their own LabTutor experiments without learning any html or programming code.
As well as offering new possibilities for LabTutor experiments in medical, allied health and physiology programs, LabAuthor will enable LabTutor experiments to be tailored for new life science and engineering curriculums.
