Four NEW LabTutor Pharmacology Experiments Available Now
Four new experiments are now available in our LabTutor Pharmacology Experiment Collection. In the new experiments, students are guided through a series of data acquisition and analysis exercises that allows them to observe the effects of various neurotransmitters and drugs on pig vascular smooth muscle, rabbit isolated heart, guinea pig tracheal smooth muscle and rat hindquarters.New LabTutor Experiments Available:
Mammalian Heart

The Langendorff isolated perfused heart system was introduced more than a century ago and is now the predominant technique used in physiological and pharmacological research. In the Mammalian Heart experiment, students will explore the effects of various neurotransmitters and drugs on an isolated rabbit heart, using a Langendorff apparatus in which the heart is perfused via its coronary arteries with oxygenated physiological saline.
Vascular Smooth Muscle
Step-by-step dissection procedures in the Vascular Smooth Muscle experiment.
Vascular smooth muscle, such as arterial rings, can be used to show not only responses to classical autonomic drugs, but also the more recently discovered role of the endothelium in modulating vascular responses. In this set of experiments, students will use vascular smooth muscle arterial rings from pig coronary artery to explore the effects of several autonomic drugs that can affect arterial smooth muscle contractions.
Airways Resistance
Airways Resistance experiment: Organ bath setup of the guinea pig trachea.
In the Airways Resistance experiment, students will learn the concepts of physiological antagonism (different chemical mediators have opposing effects) and competitive antagonism (two or more drugs compete for the same receptor). In this experiment, students will investigate the responses of guinea pig tracheal smooth muscle to inflammatory mediators, neurotransmitters, and drugs used in the treatment of asthma.
Vascular Resistance
Vascular Resistance experiment Introduction page with the list of various agonists and antagonists used.
In this set of experiment, the rat hindquarter is used to examine drugs that affect blood pressure, without any influence from the heart. The isolated hind limb of the rat is perfused with various agonists and antagonists at a constant flow and any change in pressure (and hence vascular resistance) is measured.
