Spike Histogram v2: More Power for Discrimination and Analysis of Spike Data

The new Spike Histogram v2 Module for LabChart 7 for Windows is now available. Advanced new features include improved spike discrimination with template matching, correlation histograms, integration with the Scope View, multi-channel analysis and new channel calculations for defined units.

What’s New in Spike Histogram v2?

  • Easy-to-use spike template discrimination
  • Auto- and cross-correlation histograms
  • Freeform height-width discrimination
  • New channel calculations for defined units
  • Multi-channel, multi-unit analysis

Features and Benefits

  • Two discrimination methods
    • Fast and easy template matching for spike discrimination or
    • Freehand height-width discrimination for precise selection of spikes
  • Add and delete spikes from a unit with a click of the mouse button
  • Multi-channel, multi-unit analysis allows comparison of any physiologic measures recorded
  • Discriminate spikes and display histograms online in real time, or analyze your data offline after recording
  • New channel calculations display properties of the defined unit(s) such as frequency
  • Re-analyze defined units with modified discriminator settings, or tweak settings in the Edit Unit dialog
  • Defined units are available in Scope View to display and review spikes
  • Six specialized histogram windows including Rate Meter, Amplitude, Interspike Interval, Peristimulus/Perievent Time, Autocorrelation, and Cross-correlation histograms
  • Easily save as *.nex to export data to NeuroExplorer® for further analysis.

Powerful Spike Discrimination

The new Spike Histogram Discriminator View. Scatter Plot of spikes defined by the Discriminator Settings (left). Spike Display pane showing waveform of each individual spike (right).

The Discriminator View is used to discriminate spikes with a template match or a freehand line drawn around the spikes of interest. The Spike Display Panel on the right overlays all of the spikes detected with the Spike Histogram Settings. In the left panel, users can define a spike group by either manually selecting units based on their height and width (freeform) or selecting a representative spike as a template. Clicking on a spike in the left panel will highlight the corresponding spike shape in the right panel. Clicking on a spike in the left panel will also display the spike in the Scope view. Right-click on an individual spike in the left panel to exclude spikes from a defined unit or add spikes to a unit.

Display and Analyze Spike Units in Scope View

Spike Histogram v2 integrates seamlessly with LabChart 7 Scope View. Spike units defined in the Discriminator View window can be used as an Event Source in Scope View to be individually reviewed.

Generation of Specialized Histogram Windows

Spike Histogram 2 module now features two additional histogram windows. Previously only available in Spike Histogram Module for Macintosh, the Autocorrelation and Cross-correlation histogram windows are now available for Windows. Spike Histogram 2 module specialized windows now include:

  • Rate Meter: plots the firing rate against time
  • Amplitude: displays a histogram of amplitudes
  • Interspike Interval: displays a histogram of interval distribution
  • Peristimulus Time: displays the frequency and timing of spikes relative to a stimulus or event
  • newAutocorrelation: detects periodicity in an individual unit
  • newCross-correlation: detects the temporal dependence of two physiologic parameters

Export Data to NeuroExplorer Software

Spike Histogram Module allows data to be exported to NeuroExplorer software for advanced analysis of spike trains. NeuroExplorer provides an extensive set of spike train analysis options and histograms including autocorrelograms, crosscorrelograms, burst analysis, spectral analysis and Poincaré maps.
