YouTube Video - Measuring Performance Anxiety with PowerLab
Watch how bioengineers at London’s Imperial College are using PowerLab to measure virtuosos' stress levels during performance in a YouTube video from the Science Museum’s Dana Centre. The video features an interactive concert hosted by the Dana Centre in June. At the concert, pianist Maiko Mori and violinist Eulalie Charland were connected to PowerLab units as they played a selection of duets and solos. Their heart rates, breathing rates and stress response were recorded in Chart (now LabChart) software. The Chart screens were projected on to a wall behind the performers, so the audience could follow the changes in the virtuosos’ physiology along with the changes in the demands of the music.

The evening was based on Imperial College bioengineering student Evan Morgan’s final year research into performance anxiety, and also featured an explanation from Mr Morgan’s supervisor, Dr Sandra Shefelbine, about how anxiety can be perceived in a performer’s physiology. The research aims to aid musicians and other performers in managing and understanding their anxiety.
