Applied Nursing Collection for LabTutor 4.3

The LabTutor Applied Nursing Collection is a new series of learning modules for teaching key physiological and pathophysiological concepts, and how they relate to nursing practice. The collection's modules integrate patient video interviews, real patient data and clinical test results with related physiology practical sessions that include students recording and analyzing physiological data. The Applied Nursing collection is also a convenient way to expose students to real and educationally-relevant patients in the classroom without the logistic problems faced in organising hospital visits.

Using the new collection, nursing students can:

  • Get hands-on practice recording vital statistics and other measurements
  • Watch real patients describing the implications of their medical condition
  • Look at specialized patient testing and test results over time
  • Compare their own biological recordings with patient data and physiological theory
  • View high-definition biological animations

Applied Nursing Modules

The Applied Nursing Modules contain two major sections.

In-Class section

The In-Class section is a series of group exercises, including recording and analyzing student data. These exercises teach students how to measure vital statistics and other parameters, and use these measurements to assess and monitor health.

Such measurements include blood pressure, ECG, heart sounds and pulse, static and dynamic lung parameters, body temperature, blood glucose, kidney function, muscle activity, and central, peripheral and autonomic nervous function.

These physiological variables are recorded by students on each other, using the LabTutor software platform and PowerLab in the classroom.

Upon completion of the In-Class section, a Report Page summarizes the students' recorded data, analyses and answers.

Case Study section

The Case Study section shows how vital statistic and other measurements are performed in a clinical setting, and how they are used to monitor and assess patients’ health. The Case Studies are unique in that they allow students to ‘meet’ real patients, and view real test results.

The case studies include short professional-quality videos in which patients talk about various aspects of their condition (usually 1 to 2 minutes) and in some modules, the patient's family members discuss the various aspects of patient care and quality of life.

Students are then presented with the results of hospital laboratory investigations. These results may include data recorded on the patients using PowerLab (in the same way students record data with LabTutor systems), as well as images and videos of test results such as:

  • Blood tests
  • CT scans
  • MR images
  • Ultrasounds
  • Angiograms

In addition to patient interviews, the Case Study includes a variety of high-quality videos that encompass:

  • The performance of specialized testing in a clinical environment
  • Health professionals discussing their contribution to patient care and rehabilitation (includes nurses, physiotherapists, nutritionists, occupational therapists and medical practitioners)
  • The patient's diagnosis, condition, treatment and quality of life as summarized by a nurse and medical specialist.

Throughout the Case Study, students are prompted to answer relevant questions and complete a report, which can be previewed before submission to an instructor.

The Case Study report can be completed in class, or outside the classroom using LabTutor Online. LabTutor Online users can also access HD versions of the videos, as well as LabTutor Documentaries - a bonus collection of multimedia resources that include case studies and biology documentaries.

High definition biological animations

Throughout the Applied Nursing Modules, students have access to high-quality animations of key biological processes.

The videos allow the visualization of complex biological concepts, so students gain a basic understanding of physiology around which details can be accumulated. The animation on the right shows the anatomy, physiology and progress of normal childbirth, with annotation.
