Dr. Terrence Sweeney, Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Scranton, has been awarded the 2012 American Physiological Society's Macknight Progressive Educator Award for his development and use of a novel cardiovascular model.

This past September, the Anatomy and Physiology teaching community lost a great friend, Prof. Salvatore 'Sam' Drogo; long-time HAPS member, dedicated and innovative educator, and fervent advocate of inquiry-based learning. In a fitting tribute to an inspiring scientist, ADInstruments and HAPS have established the annual Sam Drogo Technology in the Classroom Award. This award honors an educator who demonstrates the innovative and effective use of technology to engage undergraduate students in human anatomy and physiology education.

ADInstruments 29th newsletter announces exciting new products for almost every application. Featured are the new-look PowerLab and Front End 35 series units, with new hardware filters and environmentally friendly parts. This next generation PowerLab is supplied with our newly released Telemetry Research system and psychophysiology systems. Other new products include LabTutor 4.2 Suite (coming soon!), teaching kits, and accessories. You can read about PowerLab's central role in psychophysiology research at UNSW, and how LabTutor transformed teaching labs at Goethe University in Germany. A software tip on macros is included with this newsletter.

ADInstruments and NABT have awarded this technology grant to Dr. Virginia Lehmkuhl-Dakhwe from Columbia College Chicago (CCC) for her innovative design and application of the latest lab-oriented technology to improve student interest and learning of biology topics. Dr. Lehmkuhl-Dakhwe plans to use the teaching system she has been awarded to expand the CCC Junior Research Scientist (JRS) program and provide physiology lessons to CCC performing arts students. The new ADInstruments Macknight Progressive Educator Award will be presented to an American Physiological Society (APS) member who demonstrates the greatest potential for applying new technologies in an innovative teaching program that effectively engages undergraduate students and leads to better teaching outcomes. Applications close 1st March, 2011.

ADInstruments Ltd was proud to be part of two different activities at the Big Bang Fair in Manchester earlier this month. In addition to providing a PowerLab that was used to measure and display children's ECGs, we also took part in the Physiological Society's Winter Biathlon activity, where the BioHarness and LabChart software were used to measure and display how different activities affected participants' heart and respiratory rates.

The ADInstruments Corporate Giving program provides support to scientific and education communities worldwide. The Early Career Development Grant will facilitate excellence in life science research by providing up and coming post-doctoral fellows with world-class data acquisition systems. Applications for this grant are open to researchers with less than 6 years of post-doctoral research experience.

Unit 858 at Inserm Toulouse have discovered two very different ways to increase their research productivity as they explore cardiovascular and autonomic nervous system function in mice. Firstly, as the winners of last year’s PowerLab Platinum Draw, they received a complete PowerLab system. Secondly, they are using LabChart Pro’s Heart Rate Variability Module and Macro Editor to automate the analysis of dozens of files containing several simultaneous ECG recordings.

ADInstruments is working together with the Faculty for Undergraduate Neuroscience (FUN) to allow access to critical teaching resources through an Equipment Loan Program. FUN members can apply to request a loan of the PTB151 Teaching System that includes the latest LabChart software and PowerLab teaching hardware for use in their teaching laboratories.
