The AM-2 is a versatile and economical monitor that transforms electrical signals being recorded into audio. It allows the user to monitor recordings without the need to constantly observe the computer screen.
The unit has two modes of operation:
- Amplitude or click: This is used to listen for events or spikes, with the squelch control to cut out background noise.
- Frequency or tone: Which gives an audible tone that varies in frequency corresponding to the input voltage level. This mode is useful in detecting a membrane potential when the electrode enters the cell.
