The MPVS-Ultra Foundation System is configured for measurement of left ventricular pressure (LVP) and volume in small (rat or mouse) through to large animal (sheep, pig) hearts, using the appropriate pressure-volume (PV) catheter. A variety of PV catheters are available for particular species with all catheters having pressure sensors (single or double) and multiple electrodes (see below). Due to their small size the sensors can be directly placed into the left ventricle of the heart for simultaneous measurement of pressure and volume with minimal disruption to heart function.
In vivo, the catheters can be used in either closed or open-chest preparations
as well as being used in the isolated working heart preparation.
The system includes a PowerLab, LabChart and LabChart Pro acquisition and analysis software. The analysis software includes the ADInstruments ECG Analysis and Blood Pressure Modules which are specifically configured to analyze and report pressure (ventricular or blood) parameters as well as examine any recordings of ECG.
Please Note:
Pressure-Volume catheters for Dog/Pig/Sheep, Rabbits/Cats, Mice/Rats are to be purchased separately. For more information or assistance please contact your nearest ADInstruments representative.

The 16-channel PowerLab 16/30 data acquisition system provides the ability to record LVP and volume as well as the opportunity to simultaneously measure other physiological parameters such as temperature and ECG with the appropriate Signal Conditioners and Transducers.
The MPVS-Ultra Pressure-Volume Unit provides analog outputs for two pressure, a composite volume and a maximum of seven volume segments. The combined pressure and volume signals can be plotted in real time using LabChart to generate pressure-volume loops which are used to determine cardiac function.
LabChart allows the user to simultaneously record and display up to 16 channels of data online. These may include left ventricular pressure, left ventricular volume, heart rate, rate of pressure change (dP/dt), rate of volume change (dV/dt), systolic and end-diastolic pressure. Signals, including pressure-volume plots, can be displayed and calculated online whilst recording. LabChart data files can be easily imported into PVAN software for additional offline analysis. The PVAN software provides the ability to calculate many specific hemodynamic parameters.
The MPVS-Ultra Foundation System allows for the analysis of cardiac and cardiovascular parameters in models of cardiac hypertrophy, cardiac failure, cardiovascular remodeling and vascular occlusions, in addition to studies involving pharmacology/toxicology and transgenic manipulation.
Some of the parameters which can be calculated using PVAN include:
- Heart rate
- Maximum and minimum volume
- End-systolic volume
- End-diastolic volume
- Maximum and minimum pressure
- End-systolic pressure
- End-diastolic pressure
- Arterial elastance
- Cardiac output
- Stroke work
- Stroke volume
- Ejection fraction
- Maximum and minimum dP/dt
- Maximum and minimum dV/dt
- Pressure at dP/dt Max and dV/dt Max
- Volume at dP/dt Max and dP/dt Min ……and many more
