Video Capture Module for Macintosh

Video Capture

Overview:

The MLS320/7 Video Capture Module for Macintosh is used for simultaneous recording and synchronization of a QuickTime movie and a LabChart data file. You can record a movie direct to your computer using a personal video camera. The movie is then saved together with the LabChart data file.

Recorded movie and LabChart data file can be played back together allowing users to observe what is happening in the movie simultaneously with any point in the recorded data, or vice versa.

The Video Capture Module should be used with the latest version of LabChart.

The Video Capture Module is also available as part of LabChart Pro. The LabChart Pro software package includes all LabChart Modules. Existing LabChart users and PowerLab system purchasers can upgrade to LabChart Pro at a special price. If you need more information please contact your ADInstruments Representative.

For more information download the Software Booklet (5.83 MB) or contact your nearest ADInstruments Representative.

Sample Applications:

Video Capture Module applications include studies that require video observation with data acquisition.

Sample applications include:
  • Exercise Physiology
  • Sleep Studies to permit supplementary behavioral observations of a sleeping subject
  • Speech Studies for synchronizing laryngeal stroboscopy images (Laryngograph Ltd) with physiological data obtained using PowerLab data acquisition unit.
  • Animal Studies for example, in a frog heart experiment the ventricular contractions can be recorded as a movie while contractile tension is simultaneously measured with a force transducer and recorded using LabChart.

Features & Benefits:

  • Simultaneously record and synchronize a QuickTime® movie and LabChart data.
  • Suitable for use with a wide range of video cameras or capture cards.
  • Video playback maintains time synchronicity allowing easy illustration of visual/physical changes associated with mechanical recording.
  • Camera Preview window showing live preview from the camera useful for initial setting of image quality.
  • The Capture Settings Dialog allows for selections including:
    • Recording: Basic recording settings including selection between video and/or audio recordings, control of start/stop recording and recording size
    • Synchronization: Synchronizes recording devices with LabChart to allow frame-accurate video/data recordings, by accounting for the delay between the recorded video and the LabChart data. (Please note that synchronization is dependent on the communication interface and computer performance. Hence a manual synchronization adjustment is provided).
    • Cache: Allows selection of temporary location in hard disk to store recorded movie files and allocation of free disk space in computer to store movie recording.
  • Video Capture video settings include settings for the compression type and frame rate used, contract, and brightness settings and the input source if more than one camera is connected.
  • Video Capture audio settings includes settings for the compression type, sampling rate, and input source if more than one sound recording device is connected.
  • Dragable Movie Marker for easy navigation between LabChart data or movie frames. Alternatively, users can scroll within the movie and correlate each point in the movie with the corresponding point in the data file or make a selection in LabChart and then choose Set Movie Position from the Capture menu to go to that point or selection. The chosen selection of the movie can then be played.
  • LabChart data files can be edited, for example a range of data can be deleted. This results in separate data blocks, each with a corresponding movie file to preserve raw data.

Important Notes:

  • Video Capture works with video cameras with USB of FireWire connections or input from any frame capture cards supported by QuickTime
  • Synchronization is dependent on the camera’s and computer’s specifications. User adjustment is possible through the Video Capture Settings dialog.
  • Movie files can be edited in external programs to comment, annotate and visually enhance the video. Timeline changes should not be attempted as this break the synchrony with the data file.
