Metabolic Module for LabChart

     General Information

The MLS240/6 Metabolic Module is intended primarily for use with the Exercise Physiology System. This system includes the following hardware: PowerLab data acquisition system, Bio Amp, Spirometer and Flow Head, Gas Analyzer, Gas Mixing Chamber, Thermistor Pod and accessories.

The Metabolic Module Module should be used with the latest version of LabChart. Click here for the latest LabChart Update for Windows.

The Metabolic Module is ideal for determining cardiorespiratory function and exercise physiology measurements. The Exercise Physiology System records inspired or expired air flow from a pneumotech, and CO2 and O2 concentrations from expired air in a gas mixing chamber. The simultaneous measurement of respiratory gas concentrations and air flow allows for the following metabolic variables to be calculated and displayed online:

  • VE expired minute volume (L/min)
  • VO2 oxygen consumption (L/min)
  • VCO2 carbon dioxide production (L/min)
  • RER respiratory gas ratio

Typical applications include metabolic measurements, respiratory gas analysis, student exercise testing, pulmonary function analysis, indirect calorimetry, anaerobic threshold, biopotential measurements and spirometry.

As the data is being collected in LabChart the graphs are updated in real time.

You can use the Metabolic Settings dialog box to enter subject details, recording parameters and environmental conditions. The setting options include:

  • Subject details: name, age, weight, height, gender, id number, comments
  • Calibration preferences: settings for automated first and second gas calibrations
  • General preferences: Averaging time (data logging) and recording time (duration of experiment) settings
  • Environment settings: Expired/inspired, atmospheric and air conditions

The Metabolic Module also provides eight options for viewing results of the metabolic calculations online and offline. The options are:

  • Log Window
  • VE(BTPS) vs V02
  • VE(BTPS) vs VCO2
  • VCO2 vs VO2
  • RER vs Time
  • VO2 vs Time
  • VCO2 vs Time
  • VE(BTPS) vs Time
Metabolic Log window The Metabolic Log window updates the values in real time, periodically, as set by the user in the Metabolic Settings dialog box. These values are used to plot in real time or offline plots listed above.
