Animal Blood Pressure
PowerLab data acquisition systems can be used to record blood pressure in animals such as the rabbit, rat, guinea pig and mouse using either invasive or non-invasive techniques. To aid in the preparation of laboratory classes, a variety of resources including ready-to-use teaching experiments and LabChart settings files are available from the Experiments section.
To make measurements of arterial blood pressure and jugular (central) venous pressure we recommend using transducers such as the Disposable BP Transducer or the Reusable BP Transducer connected to a Bridge Amp or Bridge Pod. Students are then able to calculate heart rate and obtain measurements of mean, systolic, diastolic and pulse pressures online using the Computed Input function or post acquisition using Cycle Variables.
For non-invasive blood pressure measurements, the NIBP tail cuff systems are configured for use with Rats (with tail diameters ≤10mm) or Mice (with tail diameters ≤6mm). These automated systems use an auscultation method where the tail blood supply is first occluded by an inflatable cuff. As the pressure is slowly released a sensitive pulse transducer will detect the return of blood flow.
To complement blood pressure recordings, students may also record ECG signals using suitable electrodes and the Animal Bio Amp.
