Respiratory Function in Animals

PowerLab data acquisition systems and LabChart may be used to introduce undergraduate students to the control of breathing and pulmonary mechanics.

Respiratory rate and pulmonary mechanics can be measured non-invasively using a Piezo Respiratory Belt Transducer, whilst the precise quantification of respiratory air flow may be performed using the Spirometer Pod and a suitable Respiratory Flow Head. Transpleural pressure may also be monitored using the Physiological Pressure Transducer with a Bridge Amp. Respiratory parameters such as FVC, FEV, FEV1, PEF, PIF, and VT are easily calculated using the Spirometry Extension. The software also automates the calibration of flow and volume and generates flow-volume plots and spirometry reports. Respiratory rate can be easily calculated online using the Computed Input function. To complement studies of respiratory function, students may also use PowerLab data acquisition systems with the Gas Analyzer to measure oxygen and carbon dioxide concentrations. Similar systems may also be used to investigate Respiratory Function in Humans.
