Students will use uterine smooth muscle in physiological saline to study the normal spontaneous activity and the effect of adding adrenergic agonists and antagonists.


The isolated uterus of a rat or guinea pig provides a good example of a tissue containing inhibitory β-adrenoreceptors.


In this experiment, students will:

  • Learn to setup the smooth muscle preparation
  • Understand spontaneous activity in smooth muscle
  • Understand the effect of adrenergic agonists and an antagonist on smooth muscle
