IMPORTANT NOTE: The transfer of a LabTutor Server is a delicate process. Precautions should be taken to always have an unaltered copy of your LabTutor Server available externally, should the transfer go wrong. If you are unsure if your LabTutor Server is being backed up, contact your Institute's IT Services.
The following steps outline how to move or duplicate an existing LabTutor Server (and all of it's settings) from one computer on to a different computer. Note that the flash drive mentioned can be replaced with any external storage such as an external hard drive or cloud storage.
Note that Step 4 can also be followed to restore your LabTutor Server from a backup location.
1. Making sure LabTutor is up to date
On your current LabTutor Server computer:
a. Log in to your LabTutor Server Admin, and in the Server | Status tab, make sure you are running the latest version. If you aren't, update using the Update button that is present. This is very important - it is essential that the backed-up copy and the fresh installation we will perform on the new computer are the exact same version of LabTutor.
b. Go to Server | Configuration and scroll to the Database Snapshot - click Snapshot Now. This will update the LabTutor Server folder to contain the most recent configuration.
2. Making a copy of your LabTutor Server
On your current LabTutor Server computer:
a. Go to Start | All Programs | ADInstruments | LabTutor Server | Service Controller (or in Windows 8, Open Tile View | Service Controller). In the resulting Window click Stop to stop the LabTutor Server Service.
b. Go to C:// | Program Data (or Application Data) | ADInstruments (this is a hidden folder, so if it doesn't show on your C:// drive you'll need to enable the viewing of hidden files and folder in your Control Panel)
c. In the ADInstruments Folder, right click and Copy the folder named LabTutor Server, and paste to the flash drive. It's important you copy and paste only - do not move the original folder or any of it's contents.
3. Performing a fresh install of LabTutor Server on the new machine
On the new computer you are transferring your LabTutor Server on to:
a. Download the LabTutor 4.5.2 Installer from here
b. Run the installer once downloaded, and follow the steps to perform a clean installation of LabTutor Server.
4. Transferring the backed up LabTutor Server
a. After the clean install has been completed, go to Start | All Programs | ADInstruments | LabTutor Server | Service Controller (or in Windows 8, Open Tile View | Service Controller). In the resulting Window click Stop to stop the LabTutor Server Service.
b. Go to C:// | Program Data (or Application Data) | ADInstruments
c. Right-click on the LabTutor Server folder and click 'rename'. Rename the folder to LabTutor Server.old
d. Insert your flash drive with the copy of your LabTutor Server folder created in step 2. Copy the folder, and Paste it into C:// | Program Data (or Application Data) | ADInstruments
e. Go to Start | All Programs | ADInstruments | LabTutor Server | Service Controller (or in Windows 8, Open Tile View | Service Controller), and in the resulting window click Start to restart the LabTutor Server Service.
This will complete the transfer of your LabTutor Server on to the new computer.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Before removing your old Server installation, make sure the LabTutor Server on the new computer runs without issue.
