The small key icon () means you are viewing the course as an Administrator or Author, and have access to the Admin Pages.
A small hat icon () means you are viewing the course as a student would see it, and have access to the student homepage. To switch back to the Admin pages, use the dropdown (triangle) menu next to the hat and select the Administrator key icon:
