Lt Immersive Nursing: Overview

Collection design

The Immersive Nursing collection was designed to build learners’ understanding of normal physiology and pathophysiology, and apply that to a patient’s condition. The collection was developed in conjunction with an educator who is a registered, practicing nurse in New Zealand.

Module structure

The collection consists of 14 modules, and each module contains the following 5 lessons: Case Study, Patient Education, Evaluation, Laboratory, and Scenario. We have designed our modules to be studied in this order, but customers can easily rearrange lessons to suit. We estimate ~6 hours of student learning per module.

Case Study  (Independent learning, ~1.5 hours)
  • Students are introduced to the patient and asked what anatomy and physiology knowledge they need to understand the patient’s condition. This is followed by relevant anatomy and physiology revision questions, then the patient’s journey is presented via short videos with accompanying questions.
Patient Education (Independent learning, ~1 hour)
  • Students focus on the nurse’s role in supporting the patient including advance care planning, communication skills, discharge summaries and medications, and reflections. They watch videos of nurses and other health care specialists describing their care of the patient.
Evaluation (Independent learning, ~30 minutes)
  • Students answer questions related to the patient’s condition and nursing care.
Laboratory (Face-to-face group learning, ~1 hour)
  • These active labs mirror those included in our Human Physiology collection (v1.2) with an added nursing-focused Challenge page.
Scenario (Face-to-face group learning, ~2 hours)
  • Students use a simulation based on the patient to practice what it means to be a nurse; from patient interactions, administering medications, or performing a clinical procedure. Instructor’s material guides the setup and debriefing.

Module topics

Autonomic dysfunction
This module centers around the autonomic complications of Ben's Type 2 diabetes. Students relate theory to practice as they complete the Autonomic Nervous System Lab. In the scenario, students are asked to perform various roles during Ben’s fortnightly foot check.

Childbirth
This module follows Jenny’s experience of childbirth, with a midwife’s guidance. In the scenario, students are asked to perform various roles as Jenny struggles with the pains of labor.

Claudication
This module focuses on Sam’s worsening peripheral vascular disease. Students relate theory to practice as they complete the Heart and Peripheral Circulation Lab. In the scenario, students are asked to perform various roles during a segmental pressure study on Sam with his wife present.

COPD
This module highlights Mary and her husband’s struggle with her chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including discussions of advance care planning. Students relate theory to practice as they complete the Lung Volumes Lab. In the scenario, students are asked to perform various roles as Mary is admitted to the hospital for exacerbation of COPD after taking her oxygen off.

Diabetes
This module centers around Carol and how she approaches life with Type 1 diabetes. Students relate theory to practice as they complete the Glucose Absorption Lab. In the scenario, students are asked to perform various roles after Carol is admitted to the hospital for salmonella poisoning, unaware that she is hypoglycemic.
