In this model a Rat Biopotential Telemeter is being used to record an invasive electrocardiogram. The two biopotential leads are located close to the heart and embedded in the muscle along the electrical axis of the heart. One lead is fixed to the dorsal surface of the xyphoid process, while the other is subcutaneously tunneled through to the sternohyoid muscle, along the trachea, and into the anterior mediastinum to get the lead as close to the right atrium as possible. This optimizes signal quality and reduces potential interference while the rat is conscious and moving around.
