Kaha telemeters can record true high-fidelity signals such as ventricular and arterial pressures, sympathetic nerve activity (SNA), biopotentials (e.g. ECG, EMG & EEG), tissue oxygen, and optogenetics stimulating and recording.


Patented wireless power technology allows for higher sampling rates (2 kHz), improved time resolutions, and opens the door for the unique use of more complicated and power intensive technologies such as oxygen sensors and high quality Millar Mikro-Tip™ sensors (rat pressure telemeters).


Rat pressure telemeters incorporate a gold standard Millar Mikro-Tip™ catheter containing a solid-state sensor at the catheter tip. This provides customers with the ability and confidence to measure long-term, highly accurate and sensitive recordings from intracardiac through to intracranial pressures.

The Benefits of Telemetry

The use of telemetry within animal research is beneficial for a wide array of reasons and is a recommended industry practice for improved animal welfare.

  • Conscious – Anesthesia affects most physiological control systems and can significantly confound your results. Telemetry allows data to be collected from conscious animals after they have recovered from surgery and enables cognitive and behavioral studies not possible under anesthesia.
  • Unrestrained – Restraining animals induces stress which affects normal physiological functions and the data recorded. Telemetry allows data collection from animals in their home cage without the stress induced by the presence of researchers or handling.
  • Long-term – By monitoring physiological functions over days, weeks or months, researchers can study biological rhythms and follow the development of pathology as it occurs. Within animal design, telemetry strengthens the statistical power of a study and can reduce group sizes.

System Configuration

A typical telemetry setup requires one telemeter of your choice and one SmartPad or tBase per animal. Each laboratory will just require one Configurator in order to configure all your Kaha equipment.

  1. Select and pair transmission frequencies between SmartPads and their Telemeters using Configurator.
  2. Surgically implant the Telemeter.
  3. Connect the SmartPad to a PowerLab and/or Instrument Interface via BNC.

You are then ready to analyze your data using LabChart 8 or LabChart Lightning.
