Cleaning and Maintenance of GSR Electrodes

The GSR electrodes (MLA0118) and GSR finger electrodes, which are MR safe (MLT117/f), use silver/silver chloride electrodes in a plastic housing. Isotonic gel should be used with these electrodes to improve skin contact and GSR recording quality.

Cleaning Procedures:

  1. Gel Removal:

    • Use a dry cotton swab to remove as much gel as possible from the electrode and housing.

    • Dip a fresh cotton swab in isopropyl alcohol and clean the electrode face and housing.

    • For stubborn gel, gently scrub with a soft brush after moistening with alcohol.

    • Caution: Avoid excessive force or strong solvents, which may damage the electrode's adhesive ring.

  2. Cleaning the Velcro Strap:

    • Rinse the Velcro strap carefully with warm water.

    • Air dry the electrodes quickly to prevent water damage and potential electrolysis.

    • Never submerge the electrodes in water.

Note on Electrode Darkening: Silver Chloride is light-sensitive, causing the outer surface to darken over time. This darkening does not affect the electrode's performance. If desired, the darkened surface can be lightly sanded with fine, non-metallic sandpaper. Avoid using chemical agents for cleaning.
