Tāne Mahuta Carney-Stirling: Intermediate Software Engineer

Meet Tāne!

Tāne is an Intermediate Software Engineer here at ADInstruments.

Tāne works on the Lt platform, building it up and keeping it working smoothly for our educators. “I handle our platform and infrastructure application development,” Tāne says, “so, things like performance improvements on our backend, database improvements, database migrations, backups, things like that.”

We were lucky enough to pick Tāne up right out of university through our internship programme. “It was in my last year at uni,” Tāne says, “I just applied thinking there might be a chance, and obviously it worked out!”

“And then when I got the full-time job, I was ecstatic,” Tāne says, “it’s a great company to work for, and the people I work with are really smart… there are a lot of people, a lot of new things to learn, just a lot that keeps the work diverse and interesting.”

Having Tāne on board has been a huge benefit for the team. His experience in small schools from primary through to high school, and then going to university through the COVID-19 pandemic has given him a clear insight into the challenges students and teachers face in a variety of environments. “I came from a relatively small town, my primary school was like 17 people,” Tāne says, “coming to university in Dunedin was like moving to the big city… it was a bit of a culture shock.”

“But you get to see this real diversity in education, and how you approach education, specifically with things like Lt. It helped me to think about how someone might be using the platform, not just someone in a bigger institution like a university, but a single instructor in a small institution… how they might manage if they don’t have IT Support for example. The UX has to be just as functional for someone managing a class of hundreds as it is for a person managing a class of 17… and vice versa.”
