+Aerobic​ ​Fitness​ ​Testing

In this lab, learners determine the aerobic power of two volunteers by measuring the maximal rate of oxygen consumption (VO 2 max). They also calculate aerobic power by analyzing gas exchange during exercise with open circuit spirometry.

+Anaerobic Fitness Testing

In this lab, learners measure anaerobic capacity through a maximum accumulated oxygen deficit (MAOD) test. They measure changes in heart and respiratory rates, and measure FEO2 and FECO2 using a gas analyser. The Aerobic Fitness Testing lab must have been completed prior to this lab, as the results from the VO2 max test are used to work out the starting work rate.

+Energy Metabolism

In this lab, learners will become familiar with the concept of energy expenditure; they will also gain an understanding of indirect calorimetry methods used to analyze substrate metabolism. Learners measure the FEO2 and FECO2 during steady state exercise, as well as ventilatory changes and changes in heart rate. Note: This lab requires access to a Gas Analyzer. Douglas bags are used to collect expired gases during exercise.

+Introduction to Fitness Testing

In this lab, learners will become familiar with some of the basic and fundamental measurements taken in fitness testing. They will examine body composition and compare the different methods used to assess it. They will analyze cardiorespiratory fitness through heart rate and blood pressure, and will assess a volunteer’s musculoskeletal fitness using a variety of methods.

+Cardiorespiratory Effects of Exercise

In this lab, learners will record the electrocardiogram (ECG), blood pressure, and respiratory movements from a healthy volunteer. They will compare the recordings made when a volunteer is at rest, during exercise, and immediately after exercise .

+Cardiovascular Effects of Exercise

In this lab, learners will record the electrocardiogram (ECG) and the finger pulse from a healthy volunteer, and compare the recordings made when the volunteer is at rest and immediately after exercise.
