How can I automatically insert comments in LabChart using the Digital Output option within SuperLab?

When using the SuperLab software to present images, it is possible to drop up to 7 unique comments within LabChart to mark the onset of different events (such as images).

Important Note:  There will be a short delay from when the Output is sent from SuperLab to when the comment will be placed in LabChart. If you need to simply mark when any image is displayed, the delay is minimized if you use the Light Sensors directly connected to the Stimtracker.

To set up Digital Outputs in SuperLab for comment entry into LabChart, follow the below steps:

On the machine that has SuperLab installed:

Within SuperLab:

1. Insert a Digital Output Event just before the Event you wish to mark in LabChart (such as an image). Set the event as a Digital Output under the 'Event Type' dialogue:

And set the Event to 'End Immediately':

2. Configure the combination of bits to be sent by the Digital Output Event. The 7 different combinations are as follows:

Note: Notice only combinations of EM0, EM1 and EM2 are used with LabChart. EM3 - EM7 are not used.

3. Add the Event you wish to mark after the above Digital Input Event.

On the machine that has LabChart installed

4. Open LabChart

5.Go to 'Setup' --> 'Preset Comments', and select 'New...'

6. Select 'Digital Byte', and enter the byte value listed in the Preset Comment Column in the table of Step 2 above. For example, if just EM0 is checked, the corresponding byte value is 32, so enter '32' into the box:

7. Give the comment the appropriate name. In the above example a happy image is presented, so enter the text 'Happy'

A simple example experiment is included here. This experiment displays 2 images in a random order - when the 'Koala' image is shown, EM0 is output (byte = 32), and when the 'Penguin' image is shown EM1 is output (byte = 64). You can then set up 2 Preset comments in LabChart to drop relevant comments into the recording.
