User Presentations: 

  • Dr. Melanie White will discuss her research journey, the rationale behind choosing the Langendorff/working heart system, and her top tips and tricks for achieving successful cardiac perfusion. She will also address potential challenges in ex vivo cardiac perfusion and strategies to overcome them.
  • Dr. Melissa Reichelt will present her recent work in isolated heart studies, focusing on developing assays for diastolic dysfunction, mechanosensing, and vascular dysfunction. She will explain how combining phenotypic assessment with gene manipulation provides deeper insights into cardiovascular health.

Dr. Melanie White (FAHA)        
Senior Lecturer, University of Sydney    

Dr. Melanie White leads the Cardiometabolic Proteomics group at the prestigious Charles Perkins Centre, the University of Sydney. Her research focuses on unraveling molecular changes in the heart in response to acute and chronic disease states, utilizing retrograde ex-vivo Langendorff perfusion. Melanie specializes in applying mass spectrometry to investigate protein, metabolite, and lipid profile changes in these disease systems. She is renowned for her work in developing small animal models of disease, pre-clinical imaging, and histology. Melanie's impressive accolades include fellowships from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), Australian Research Council (ARC), and the Heart Foundation. She is a fellow of the American Heart Association (FAHA) and on the executive committee of the Australian Proteomics Society (APS).

Dr. Melissa Reichelt  
Senior Lecturer, University of Queensland

Dr. Reichelt is a teaching and research academic at The University of Queensland where she leads the Cardiac Disease and Therapy Laboratory. She undertook her PhD studies at the Heart Foundation Research Centre at Griffith University, working primarily in isolated heart physiology. She then worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, The University of California, San Diego and the University of Melbourne (as a NHMRC Fellow), before being recruited to The University of Queensland. Dr Reichelt has published 18 papers incorporating isolated-perfused heart data.

Dr. Cher-Rin Chong     
NHMRC Research fellow, University of Adelaide 

Dr. Cher-Rin Chong is an NHMRC Research Fellow based in Adelaide, where she leads a research program focused on heart failure in the context of diabetes and metabolic disorders. Originally trained as a pharmacist, Dr. Chong's career transitioned into research after completing her PhD in cardiovascular pharmacology at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, supervised by Professors John Horowitz and Betty Sallustio. She then furthered her expertise in cardiac metabolism and physiological biochemistry as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Oxford under Professors Kieran Clarke and Rhys Evans. Since returning to Adelaide in 2019, Dr. Chong has expanded her work to investigate the complex interplay between heart failure, diabetes, and cancer, contributing to advancements in targeted therapeutic strategies.

Dr. Anida Velagic     
Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Monash University 

Dr. Anida Velagic is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Heart Failure Pharmacology Laboratory at the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and holds an honorary position in the Cardiac Regeneration Laboratory at St Vincent's Institute of Medical Research. Anida received her PhD from Monash University in 2023. Her current research focuses on targeting pathways that drive cardiovascular disease development using animal models and human cells. She has made impactful contributions to cardiovascular research, as evidenced by publications in the American Journal of Physiology - Heart and Circulatory Physiology, the British Journal of Pharmacology, the Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology, Antioxidants and Redox Signaling, and others. Her work has been recognized by awards from leading international cardiovascular societies, including the International Society for Heart Research (ISHR; Student Publication Prize; Early Career Scientist Excellence Award) and the American Heart Association (AHA; Paul Dudley White International Scholar Award). Anida is Co-Chair of the Australasian Society of Clinical and Experimental Pharmacologists and Toxicologists (ASCEPT) Cardiovascular Special Interest Group (CV SIG) and an Editor for Frontiers in Physiology.
