In this webinar, Dr. Edward Bliss and A/Professor Dean Mills will share how they use PowerLab C and LabChart to conduct whole-body physiological testing in research involving clinical populations.

Group Overview:
A/Prof Mills and Dr Bliss lead complementary research programs aimed at improving brain, respiratory, and cerebrovascular health across athletic, healthy, and clinical populations. Their work combines whole-body human testing with basic science to uncover the mechanisms driving cognitive and physiological function, and to develop targeted lifestyle interventions. Dr Bliss is recognised for his expertise in applied neuroscience and holistic assessments of brain health, particularly in older adults with chronic disease. A/Prof Mills is known internationally for his work in respiratory and exercise physiology, with a focus on enhancing exercise tolerance and respiratory function through precise physiological measurement and intervention. Current projects that will be discussed in this presentation include breast cancer and brain health, capsaicin in brain health and a co-designed physical activity intervention to improve cognition and cerebrovascular function.

Dr. Edward 'Teddie' Bliss

Dr. Edward 'Teddie' Bliss is a Senior Lecturer in Medical Laboratory Science and an experienced multidisciplinary Medical Laboratory Scientist with a background in laboratory management. His research focuses on cerebrovascular function, cognition, biomarker analysis, and cardiometabolic diseases. He has led studies examining the effects of supplements in animal models of metabolic syndrome and the impact of lifestyle interventions, such as exercise training and capsaicin supplementation, on brain health in populations at risk of cognitive decline. His work aims to identify strategies to prevent or delay neurodegenerative diseases like dementia by improving cardiovascular and brain health, particularly in chronic disease populations such as individuals with metabolic syndrome and breast cancer.
A/Prof Dean Mills
Associate Professor, Exercise Physiology, School of Health and Medical Sciences

Dean Mills is an Associate Professor in Exercise Physiology at the University of Southern Queensland, Australia. His doctorate was undertaken at Nottingham Trent University, UK and investigated the effects of respiratory muscle work and inspiratory muscle training on cytokines, oxidative stress and diaphragm fatigue in healthy human populations. Subsequent postdoctoral training at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Brisbane investigated novel techniques to measure respiratory function in children with chronic respiratory disease. His current research examines the physiological and biochemical consequences of an increased work of breathing, exercise-induced respiratory muscle fatigue and the effects of exercise on cerebrovascular and cognitive function.
