User Presentations: 

  • Professor Kate Denton will discuss her research journey and how she uses the Transonic system to measure kidney blood flow, interrogating drug actions and to understand the pathophysiology of hypertension and chronic kidney disease.
  • Dr. Tonja Emans will explore how she uses Transonic Flowprobes in chronic studies to measure cerebral blood flow and mesenteric blood flow. She will share insights from her research and how she has used Transonic Flowprobes for chronic measurements in her recent publication: Forgotten Circulation: Reduced Mesenteric Venous Capacitance in Hypertensive Rats Is Improved by Decreasing Sympathetic Activity.
  • Dr. Beth Allison will explore the utility of Transonic Flowprobes to assess regional blood flow in both health and disease across pregnancy and the perinatal period, highlighting their value in translational research and clinical innovation.
  • Associate Professor Rohit Ramchandra will discuss investigating chronic recordings of autonomic nerve activity and blood flow to various organs in large animal models. He'll also explore his recent work utilising direct recordings of cardiac output and coronary blood flow in conscious exercising sheep and explain how this has helped us better understand autonomic control of heart function.

Professor Kate Denton

Professor Kate Denton

Kate Denton is an integrative physiologist. Her research focuses on cardiovascular and renal physiology, particularly emphasising the kidney's role in regulating arterial pressure. Current projects examine sex differences in the role of the renin-angiotensin system in arterial pressure regulation, the impact of hypertension during pregnancy on mothers, the developmental origins of hypertension, and renal denervation as a treatment for hypertension and CKD. Her work has gained international recognition. In 2017, she received the AHA Council for Hypertension Dustan Award, which recognises female investigators who have made outstanding contributions in the field of hypertension, and in 2018, she received the inaugural International Society of Hypertension Excellence Award for Research in Cardiovascular Disease in Women. In 2024, she delivered the Ernest H. Starling Distinguished Lecture at the American Physiological Summit, in recognition of her significant and meritorious contributions to Water & Electrolyte Homeostasis research. Professor Denton is an Associate Editor for AJP Renal and Experimental Physiology and serves on the Editorial Board for Hypertension and the Journal of Hypertension, and she has participated in numerous selection committees for nationally and internationally competitive funding.

Dr. Tonja Emans is a research fellow in the circulatory and cerebrovascular control laboratory at the University of Auckland and affiliated with the Pūtahi Manawa Centre of Research Excellence. She obtained her PhD in the Netherlands at the Academic Medical Centre in Amsterdam. Her work during her PhD was focused on kidney oxygenation measurements by telemetry in collaboration with the nephrology department in Utrecht. Tonja is keenly interested in gaining valuable insights from conscious blood pressure and simultaneous blood flow recordings, which are crucial in developing new therapeutic strategies. Currently, her research explores the effects of sympathetic control on arterial and venous blood pressures and organ perfusion in health and disease (including hypertension, diabetes, and ischemic stroke). This research aims to discover novel mechanisms to ameliorate high blood pressure through continuous physiological measurements in cardiovascular pre-clinical models.

Dr. Beth Allison is an internationally recognised leader in perinatal cardiovascular physiology, with a focus on improving cardiovascular and neurodevelopmental outcomes in growth-restricted and preterm infants. She heads the Perinatal Cardiovascular Physiology Group at the Hudson Institute of Medical Research and lectures in physiology at Monash University.

Dr. Allison completed her PhD in Physiology at Monash University and undertook postdoctoral training at the University of Cambridge. Her research has been continuously funded by the NHMRC and other major national and international bodies, contributing over $10 million in competitive grant funding. She has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications.

A committed mentor and advocate for equity in science, Dr. Allison has successfully supervised over 20 graduate and honours students and led initiatives supporting early- and mid-career researchers. She is a member of several national funding panels, including NHMRC and the New Zealand Health Research Council, and served as an elected Board Member (Secretary) of the Perinatal Society of Australia and New Zealand from 2022–2024. In recognition of her leadership, she was selected as one of Australia’s top 30 STEM leaders by Veski in 2018.

Associate Professor Rohit Ramchandra directs an independent internationally-recognized lab examining autonomic control of the circulation. His expertise and track record are in obtaining technically challenging direct recordings of autonomic nerve activity and cardiovascular parameters in conscious chronically instrumented animals during various physiological challenges. His lab uses these technically demanding recordings to investigate novel interventions targeting autonomic dysregulation in hypertension and heart failure; these include both new drug treatment targets as well as utilizing novel device based interventions.
