Biopotentials and GSR

The ability to easily record and measure various physiological responses is a key requirement in psychophysiology where the focus is on the relationship between mental and physiological processes. Some of the most common physiological processes measured in modern psychophysiology include biopotential recordings (EOG, ECG, EMG, EEG) and Galvanic Skin Response (GSR), which measures the electrical conductance of the skin in response to stimuli.

With data acquisition solutions from ADInstruments, you can record and measure skin conductance as well as biopotentials, and simultaneously display and analyze them against other physiological signals in real-time. Galvanic Skin response is of interest in psychophysiology as eccrine glands respond readily to a person’s mental and emotional state and are often more responsive that other variables such as skin temperature.

GSR: Recording Relative Conductance

If you are interested in relative conductance to measure small changes in response to questions etc, rather than absolute conductance (actual value of skin conductance), you can perform a software subject zero before recording data by offsetting (within PowerLab) to subtract the ‘resting’ voltage from the front-end output and allow data acquisition gain to be used optimally to determine the GSR range. Small changes can then be seen by choosing an appropriate gain range.
