Measure Peak expiratory flow (PEF) as maximum flow rate attained during FVC maneuver, or peak inspiratory flow (PIF) as peak flow rate at inhalation. Graph flow-volume to indicate obstruction and/or restriction present in airway abnormalities.
Spirometry is a lung function test which measures the amount (volume) and speed (flow) of air that can be inhaled or exhaled from the lungs. Spirometry is an important tool for assessing conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cystic fibrosis.
There are a number of techniques available for assessing lung function using spirometry in order to support acquisition and analysis of flow, lung volumes, respiratory and pulmonary pressures and lung sounds from human subjects.
In conjunction with our complete system shown below, any device (i.e. ergometer, exercise bike, treadmill) with an analog output (+/- 10V) can be connected to a PowerLab data acquisition system for synchronization of event in LabChart. So you have even more flexibility and can integrate all your data streams in one place.
All of our hardware recommended for human use is backed by the appropriate safety certification standards. More information on safety standards.

The volume trace can be separated into inspired and expired components. The subject breaths in a fixed volume of air which is at room temperature. When the air enters the lungs, it becomes warmed and humidified, which increases the volume of the air. Subsequently the volume of the expired portion of breath is greater than the volume of the inspired portion. The result is a drifting volume trace. This can be resolved by using a heated flow head (such as the Heated Pneumotach 800L with Heater Controller (MLT3813H-V)) which ensures the temperature of both the inspired and expired air is the same. Alternatively, the Spirometry extension in LabChart eliminates drift by applying a correction factor to reduce the expired volume.
