ADInstruments and Data Sciences International have partnered globally to provide an unparalleled solution for small animal telemetry.

Integrating the strengths of LabChart and PhysioTelTM, this system provides researchers with a flexible and reliable solution that has simplicity at its core.

When looking to provide a telemetry solution in animal research applications, we wanted to partner with a company that would not only provide you with the best technology, but would also share similar values to us and believe in putting the power in your hands so you are free to focus on your research, wherever it may take you. DSI are known for developing proven technology that provides reliable data and reproducible results through the most humane means possible. Unsurpassed in the field of telemetry, the PhysioTelTM HD implants from DSI are the most advanced small animal telemetry products available on the market today. PhysioTelTM implant sensors can record a varying range of biopotentials, pressure signals, activity and temperature and their hermetic coating and long battery life make them ideal for extended sampling periods.

Together with DSI, we have created a combined solution that streams this continuous PhysioTelTM telemetry data from freely moving animals via the PhysioTel CONNECT device enabler into LabChart analysis software where you can get started on your analysis quickly and confidently.

With a wide range of standard and customizable analysis features in LabChart, and the ability to synchronize sampling of additional analog signals via PowerLab - when it comes to flexibility you are only bound by the parameters of your research.

Benefits of Telemetry

The use of telemetry within animal research is beneficial for a wide array of reasons and is a recommended industry practice for improved animal welfare.

  • Ability to work with conscious, freely moving animals
  • Improved animal welfare and reduced stress artifacts results in improved data quality
  • Suitable to studies requiring continuous recording across extended periods
  • Ability to record multiple data points from a single subject
  • Lowered animal costs

DSI’s Animal Welfare Promise

Both ADI and DSI honor the contribution of research animals and are committed to treating them with respect. The specifics of how this is upheld through our Telemetry offering is outlined in DSI’s Animal Welfare Promise:

Maintain a high standard of care for our research animals

We spend a great deal of time and effort ensuring our animals receive the best possible care. We strive to meet and exceed regulatory requirements, maintaining an internal Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, providing comprehensive training for DSI staff, and actively participating in numerous scientific meetings to share and gain knowledge about animal welfare best practices.

Provide resources to help researchers achieve high animal welfare standards

We want to empower researchers to meet and exceed animal welfare standards. Therefore, we offer training and services based on state-of-the-art, humane techniques to improve best practices and approaches to biomedical research.

Support the 3 Rs (Reduction, Refinement, Replacement)

We established our animal welfare standards with the 3 Rs in mind. We are committed to developing innovations and technology that enhance animal welfare and refine scientific methods. Telemetry has been shown to reduce the overall number of animals used in studies and minimize stress by monitoring conscious, freely moving animals.

If your research model involves recording from nine or more animals, or you require GLP validation and support please contact one of our representatives to find out what options are most suitable for you.

PhysioTelTM HD Implants

PhysioTelTM HD implants measure differing combinations of pressure and biopotentials in small animals. In addition, all HD implants measure temperature and activity. Each HD implant is designed for accuracy and high performance. Ease of use and time saving afforded through implant autoconfiguration, encoded animal ID to prevent incorrect data collection, and battery life monitoring capabilities. All HD implants provide improved animal welfare by allowing the subject to move freely within the cage. The electronics enclosure are hermetically sealed to ensure successful use in extended duration studies.

Go Beyond the Standard Approach with LabChart

With LabChart analysis software, your research questions drive the analysis options, not the other way around. Providing the perfect balance of ease, flexibility and power, LabChart allows you to acquire signals from multiple sources simultaneously and apply advanced calculations as your experiment unfolds.

  • Getting started with LabChart is straight-forward and user-friendly meaning the learning curve for new users is much lower.
  • You can choose to either use a range standard analysis tools like cyclic measurements, spectrum, channel calculations, data pad; or you can easily customize macros specific to your own unique research requirements to provide flexibility in your study design.
  • LabChart tracks every action you take while never modifying your raw data, ensuring the integrity of your results so you can focus on the true insights of your research.
  • Flexibility via PowerLab to add other analog signals such as gas analysis, spirometry, stimulation and cystometry into your research with confidence.
